Pt bath characterization project defines operating windows for stable deposit quality on aero engines

Over the past 24 months Elsyca have carried out extensive characterization of several Pt electrolyte baths for some of the major aero engine producers and plating shops. This type of electrolyte is used for applying a Pt bonding layer on aero-engine components such as high pressure turbine blades and nozzle guide vanes, as part of a thermal barrier layer.

All relevant plating bath characteristics are determined: electrolyte conductivity; cathodic polarisation and plating efficiency as a function of current density; deposit layer characteristics as a function of local current density and flow conditions; anodic polarisation.

The influence on the plating bath characteristics is investigated for varying process parameters such as pH, temperature, bath aging and Pt content, in order to determine the sensitivity of the bath characteristics towards these process parameters.  This enables defining the operational window in which good quality deposits are guaranteed.
