Material Characterization

Description

Corrosion and cathodic protection are electrochemical processes taking place at the metal surface of structures. Understanding the electrochemical behaviour of the material enables the accurate prediction of the corrosion rates and cathodic protection efficiency.

Materials can be characterized in Elsyca's laboratories. Elsyca has developed an advanced and application-specific Design of Experiment (DoE) in order to accurately capture the essential electrochemical and physical characteristics of a material/electrolyte system:

For marine, offshore and process applications:

  • polarization data of the material;
  • physical properties and chemical composition of the electrolyte;
  • dynamic flow conditions ( e.g. seawater velocity);
  • scale & corrosion products formation;
  • coating condition.

For soil applications:

  • polarization data of the material;
  • soil resistivity and pH;
  • moisture content and soil texture;
  • scale & corrosion products formation;
  • coating condition.

Polarization data can be analyzed further and post-processed by Elsyca's CurveAnalyzer. With this software, new polarization curves can be generated for different environmental parameters that influence the corrosion behaviour (varying oxygen concentration, pH, etc.).
