Design for Plateability

What services do we offer?

Design for Plateability is an early stage analysis to evaluate the ‘manufacturability’ of a specific design in relation to the electroplating process.

For a long time, the plating industry has known that design characteristics such as sharp edges or recessed areas add challenges to an already difficult process. A plateability analysis quantifies this challenge resulting in reduced risks and better process control.

Starting from the CAD model of the part and using customer specific process parameters, a 3D electroplating simulation provides thickness distributions over the part that can be checked versus imposed specifications. The resulting data are analyzed, post-processed and reported.

What value do we bring?

An up-front engineering analysis of the plating process allows the identification of potential issues and their probable impact on cost and production.

This is of major advantage

  • for OEMs:
    • to direct quoting queries to the suppliers more likely to overcome the identified issues – saving on lead time and costs related to potential warranty issues;
    • to pin-point areas for re-design in view of ease of manufacturing.
  • for job platers:
    • to illustrate and quantify to their customer the plating process and product quality issues, differentiating their approach and improving probability of winning RFQ’s in this very competitive market;
    • to enable reduction of trial and error runs, waste and energy at source.

In conclusion, the “Design for Plateability” service allows OEMS and plating suppliers to seek out the optimum compromise between design and manufacturability.
